Day 5: Northern California Road Trip!

The next morning we drove up the mountain to hike Bumpas Hell. This trail is only open for about 3 months of the year due to weather so I was super excited to get to hike it. Bumpass Hell Trail provides access to the largest hydrothermal area in the park and is about 3 miles round trip. I am not gonna lie the rain, elevation, and cold made this a less than fun hike but once we reached the thermal features it was all worth it!

On the drive down from the hike the sun came out and gave us an amazing rainbow!

After the trail all our hiking gear needed to dry so it was nap time! When I woke up the sun was out and most of the fog had rolled off of Lassen peak so I got my most clear view of it for the trip!

Next ups I read through all of the national park signs and learned more about the 2021 Dixie Fire, which burned nearly 70% of the park. I also learned about the sizzling rocks that followed the May 1915 eruption of Lassen!

A reminder of the parks thermal activity is at the north visitors center where the original seismograph sits. We were not able to go in it due to the government shut down starting this day. Which we learned about via the wifi at the visitors center. Turns out Lassen Volcanic National park is a really good place to unplug due to the limited cell service but not such a great place to be when the government shuts down. The park website let us know we would be able to finish our last night at the campground but all non campground service would be closed.

The night brought on an amazing scene of the moon rising over Lassen Peak
