Where is Gandalf?

As I look at the world around me I wonder where is Gandalf?
Have the elves abandon us?
Are the dwarves in there mines?
Right now all I see is Wormtoung.
The world that shaped the words of Tolkien seems closer than I would ever like to have lived in. As men give Nazi salute in front of large crowds in the USA. I wonder what his pre war writings would tell me about this time.
