Adventures in Spain: Day 12

written in spain, madrid, travel

Our first stop in madrid was San Gines. It has served principally chocolate con churros since 1894. The chocolate is served in Spanish style - thick, dark and strong. The churros are cut to length by the staff and served hot and freshly cooked, ready for dunking. Open 24 hrs a day 7 days a week for all your churro needs. Warning the coffee was mid but seeing pics of the famous peeps who have visited on the walls including jimmy Carter was cool!

El Retiro ParkThe Retiro Park, also known as Buen Retiro Park or simply El Retiro, is one of the largest city parks in Madrid, Spain. The park belonged to the Spanish monarchy until 1868, when it became a public park following the Glorious Revolution. We also wandered through the parks La Rosaleda in El Retiro Park which had serene, landscaped garden with thousands of rose bushes, stone fountains, ponds & arbors.

The Crystal Palace was closed.. Hope to go visit one day.... but we got to see black swans!

Museo Nacional del PradoThe Museo del Prado, officially known as Museo Nacional del Prado, is the main Spanish national art museum, located in central Madrid.

After 12 days of mild food J and I wanted some spice and we lucked out at Surat Indian Cuisine! It was delightful!

J decided to rest so I went out to see the city and on my bucket list was to see the Temple of Debod. The Temple of Debod is an ancient Nubian temple currently located in Madrid, Spain. "The temple was originally erected in the early 2nd century BC 15 km south of Aswan, Egypt. The Egyptian government donated the temple to Spain in 1968 as a sign of gratitude for their participation in the International Campaign to Save the Monuments of Nubia. It was dismantled, transported, and rebuilt in the Parque de la Montaña in 1970–1972. It is one of the few works of ancient Egyptian architecture relocated outside Egypt and the only one of its kind in Spain." [ 0 ]

So if I am being honest this one is kinda sad for me. Spain has not kept this amazing site up and has not fulfilled its agreement with egypt to put the monument in a building. Thus it has seen so much damage due to weather.

I got to continue wondering about the city walking through parks and by the palace till the weather drove me indoors.
