Day 8: Northern California Road Trip!

The next morning we got up and left Roosevelt Base Camp to make the short drive to The Tall Trees Trail head. This area requires a permit all year to hike here and has a key with a gate and code. Please stay on the trail and protect this amazing old growth area. This Trail has 800 ft of elevation gain and is several miles so make sure to save a few hours for it. It was worth any effort to get the permit and pictures do not do any justice to this hike.

On this trail we got to see excellent examples of burls. Burls are the second way a redwood can grow as they contain the genetic code of the tree and can sprout new trees! They have been poached due to there intricate patterns so the examples here are really amazing and speak to the conservation efforts that the parks have taken.

After this amazing hike we headed on southward. We stopped off at moon stone beach to see some of the incredible rock features

We contunied our southern drive through The Avenue of Giants in Humboldt Redwoods State Park.

We ended our journey with sunset at Cape Mendocino Lighthouse at Shelter Cove in the Range National Conservation Area. This area was visually stunning. We stayed at the Inn of the Lost Coast right on the water! This is an area I would love to come back to and spend some time!

The tide pools at sunset were such a treat and held so much life. The seals were so much fun to watch in the water and on the rocks!
